Can I use 10AWG from main panel to first box, then 12AWG from there?
I asked an earlier question around this topic (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aqt3yRhfhWyRJZddIY16MObsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20101105194428AA48aZY), but I have a follow on after starting the work:
In converting one ungrounded 30A 220V circuit to one 20A grounded circuit (by taping the red wire as ground), turns out all the wires (white black & red) are 10 AWG not a mix of 10 & 12 gauge as I had previously thought.
Just want to confirm it's ok to run from the main panel to the first box using this 10AWG wire (white, black & ground) and then from there feed additional receptacles using 12/2 romex.

Yes, with 2 conditions.
1. The circuit must be protected with a breaker no more than 20 amps.
2. The romex must be installed as per code. No direct burial, no wet areas, and it must be protected from physical damage.
When changing wire sizes, the smallest wire is what must be used to rate the breaker size.
