replacing an extension cord end?
I bought a new male end for a worn out extension cord. I have all my wires ready to connect but the only wire that is labeled (color) is the ground (green). How can I test to see if i have the wires connected properly? Can i just plug it in, turn it on, and see if it works or not? I have not tried anything yet I know electricity can be very dangerous. Does it really even matter? I have a lot of 2 prong stuff that I can stick in the receptacle either way.
As you are looking at the end of the cord, hold it so the ground is down. The hot (brass screw) will be on the left, the neutral (silver screw) will be on the right. Unless this is a very old cord, the insulation on the inner wires should be black, white, and green. If you have a continuity tester, check the black, or the one on the left, with the small slot on the female end. You should have continuity between them. If not, try the other wire. The narrow slot is hot, the wide slot is neutral. Hope this helps.
