how would you start your own volunteer BLS ambulance service? With just EMT's and First responders in AR.?
A couple of guys on my 1st responder crew were talking about wanting to start a volunteer ambulance service for BLS only in ARkansas. How would you go about setting up a volunteer ambulance? We live in a rural area, with a population of maybe 800 people, yet we stay busy with medical calls. It takes 15 minutes for a close ambulance to get by and sometimes it takes 30 minutes up to an hour to get an ambulance.
Check with the Arkansas Board of EMS to find out how to get an ambulance license. You will usually need a license to operate an ambulance company, even a volunteer one. Obviously, there needs to be standards, or else people would just throw some supplies in the back of a pickup and call it an ambulance company 
Are you going to be transporting patients, or just waiting with them until the professionals arrive? If you aren't going to be transporting patients, then you'd fall under the guidelines of a volunteer rescue squad, and it's going to be a lot easier to work out the licensing/insurance/certification issues.
If you're going to transport patients, then you will need an ambulance. A brand new one will set you back about $100,000, fully loaded with ALS equipment. I'm sure it's a bit cheaper for BLS equipment. You'll need to get insurance, send drivers to ambulance-driver training, and probably get all your personnel (at least the ones riding in the back with the patient) trained to the EMT-B level. You'll need to keep the ambulance stocked with the minimum amount of equipment required by the state.
