Theoretical e/m question - wire and ring.?
Let's say you have an INSULATING ring and an infinitely long wire resting on a frictionless table. The wire is fixed to the table, but the ring is free to move around. Initially, the wire is carrying a current (I) toward the far edge of the table and the ring has a net charge of +Q (uniformly distributed). The ring is stationary.
Then, at time t=0, the current in the wire is cut in half (I/2).
Will the ring spin? If so, will it be clockwise or counterclockwise?
Will the ring slide along the table? If so, will it be toward the wire, away from the wire, toward the near edge of the table, or toward the far edge of the table?
I know it has something to do with an induced electric field exerting force/torque on the ring...but that's about it.
First, the wire can't be infinitely long, or it would not only cover the surface of the table but would tower infinitely high above the table. But, one assumes the ring inside its insulation is a conductor.
So, let's just assume there is a wire, somehow arranged on the table in such a way as to not restrict movement of the ring.
Before the current is reduced, there is a magnetic field surrounding each incremental element of the wire. There is a resultant magnetic field which links the area of the ring. This field will be normal to the ring.
When the current is reduced, there is a corresponding change in the product of the area of the ring times the magnetic field. This change will induce a current in the ring which will produce a field in opposition to the change of the field resulting from the current in the wire.
During the time the current in the ring is changing ( there will be some resistance in the ring, hence an effective L/R time constant for the induced current to fall to zero) there will be two forces between the two fields, one normal to the surface of the ring and one through the ring diameter.
The ring will experience no torque. It will not spin. Any forces on the ring will be a result of the system trying to assume a minimum resultant energy, and will lie in the plane of the ring and directed along a diameter as a result of a difference in magnetic field strength across the ring area, which is the result of the geometric arrangement of the wire. It may move along the table if in doing so it reduces the total flux linking its area, in which case one needs to know more about the geometry of the wire path to say in which direction it will move.
