what could make a gfci go bad?

I have a GFCI in an outdoor location. It is inside a weatherproof bell box. It is the only outlet on circuit and the only load is a Digital readout for a drive on scale(@.5amps). I have had to change this receptacle three times in less than a year and each time it trips , will not reset and feels like internals are fried.(crunchy feel when I try to reset) I have siliconed gaps around box and have a good drip loop in cord, so water is not running down cord into GFCI. And yes I am up to code using a WR rated receptacle.

Is it very humid where you reside? I have seen a few different GFCI's fail due to humid conditions. No matter how sealed a box is if it's humid it will cause moisture. Are you using Weather Seal brand?
