Safe to have two loaded surge protectors in single receptacle?
I'm trying to catch up on some electrical know-how. I have two computer systems, each with their own independent surge protector. Both surge protectors are connected to the same standard two outlet receptacle.
Are these drawing too many amps from the receptacle? Each surge protector has 10 independent connections. So does this equal 20 connections to the receptacle? I think that would be too much.
If you are REALLY concerned, you need to look at each and every piece of electrical equipment plugged in. By law, they all must display the amount of current they consume, either in watts or amperes. Add the total and then find the circuit in your panel to which they are connected, and compare. An electrician can use a tool called an ampmeter, and check the total amps used. If you overload the circuit, the breaker should trip, but this does not ALWAYS occur. Overheating is your main concern, and you can physically touch the insulated part of wires to feel this, even at the wires of the surge protectors themselves.
