Types of warning whip lights and its installation
A warning whip with lights can make such a difference in the visibility of vehicles in a plant or site where tracking vehicles is important. With light on the top of a warning whip, the protective lens color can identify the vehicle it is atop, as well as be flashing or glowing to indicate movement of stoppage. The lights are also helpful during dawn and twilight hours for increased visibility of the vehicle. Many combinations exist for use in different applications.
Choices in Warning Whip Lights
When the choice is made to have a warning whip with lights, there are further decisions to make. The color, the rate at which the bulb flashes or is glowing and the shape of the bulb are all considerations. Basic primary colors are typically available, with green and amber too. The color on the traditional shape is actually determined by the protective lens and not just the bulb itself. Various shapes of lighting can be provided, from a glow worm shape of the bulb itself to a traditional cover with a metal cap. When the traditional lens is selected, typically the lens, bulb and metal cap must be ordered separately to complete the order.
A flashing bulb can be a challenge to be around sometimes, whether it is an on/off flash or a strobe. That's why manufacturers have developed an optional built-in flasher control on a warning whip with lights. Settings such as on and off, fast flash, slow flash and even strobe can be changed at a touch of a button on a small, quarter-sized device.
Warning Whip with Lights Installation
The second concern to be addressed when choosing this type of whip is what type of installation and mounting is desired. When a light is at the top of a warning whip, it must have a power source for the 12 volt lamp. The source is typically the vehicle battery but a temporary magnetic mount base is also available that can plug into a lighter in the dash of the car. The more permanent warning whips are made with a half inch hole made in the vehicle, but hitch mounts, billet mounts, "L" brackets, and steel stake mounts are available too, along with the basic flat surface mounting bracket. The final mounting alternative is a spring mount, which works well with heavy duty warning whips that are accustomed to rocky terrain.
Besides the mounting, the warning whip can be fastened with the typical hot plug or easy mount adapter with a hot wire pigtail and a ground wire pigtail can be incorporated as well. Other options are quick disconnect sets accessible on the hitch mount with power and a back up alarm.
Whether you are the individual that wants to be seen, or the supervisor that wants to see facilities' vehicles, installing a warning whip with lights on the appropriate vehicles will be a task worth doing.
