Can you tell what purpose a screw is made for (drywall, stucco, wood, metal, etc.) by its thread pattern (how wide or narrow the thread is) or by the way the point of the screw is shaped (flat, chisel, pointed, etc.)?

Steep threads tapering out to a round sharp point are to go into wood or other soft materials.
Steep threads that suddenly come to a steep point at the end are sheet metal screws.
Screws with a double point (like a drill bit) are called Tech screws, and will drill themselves through thin metal and then thread in.
Shallow threads that end with a flat end are machine screws and are meant to go into a threaded hole or have a nut applied.
