How to Grow Mushrooms in Your Apartment
Various individuals have caught on to a growing trend of growing organic mushrooms at home. Some do it for fun while others do it because it is cost effective. Mushrooms retail at a very high price and many cannot afford the delicacy. The simplest way for those living in an apartment to grow mushrooms successfully is with the use of a mushroom growing kit.
These kits are available at many retail and gardening stores nationwide. They are relatively low cost in a range of twenty to thirty dollars. These kits include detailed instructions for an enjoyable growing experience.
Helpful Tips for Gardeners
Before choosing a kit, individuals should decide which variety of mushroom they wish to grow. Most are usually available in various sizes such as standard and giant. The most popular kits are for growing Portabello, Morels, Shiitake, Buttons, and Enoki mushrooms. Each variety will differ in the amount of time before a harvest of mushrooms is ready. Some helpful tips and knowledge about these kits are as follows:
• Inspect the chosen kit to make sure there is no mold or any problematic growths. If anything seems to be wrong with kit it should be returned for a replacement.
• Follow all included instructions. Never skip a step or add a step.
• The kit should be placed in a dark area of the apartment such as a closet or cabinet.
• The temperature should be maintained between 65 and 75 degrees F.
• After setting up the kit, it is important to maintain the moisture. Only mist with water using a spray bottle. Never water until the kit is wet or soggy. Never allow it to dry out.
• When small white pinheads appear, this is the fruiting start. Humidity should be maintained during this stage.
• If no fruiting appears in the given amount of time, the kit can be put into a refrigerator in order to push the process of fruiting. If there is still no sign of fruiting, contact the vendor of the kit for any possible replacement.
• When the mushrooms pop out they are ready to be harvested.
• Cut these at the base of the stem or pinch them with the fingers to harvest.
• Most kits will produce multiple harvests over several weeks and can produce up to five pounds of mushrooms.
• After the kit stops producing a harvest, it can be disposed of. Most kits can simply be put in a compost pile and often they will yield another harvest there.
Freshly harvested mushrooms can be washed and eaten. Some individuals dry their mushrooms in order to preserve the flavor and extend their shelf life. Once the mushrooms have been harvested they are ready for the table. Fresh mushrooms should be thoroughly washed before adding to any dishes.

More than likely you have wood that is decomposing just under the soil. If the mushrooms bother you that much get a hard rake and check for rotting wood under the dirt.
