bending stress = Moment*y/I
Moment = PL/4 = (2 kip)(12 ft)/4 = 6 ft-kip = 72 in-kip
y = d/2 (in this case) = 6.25 in
I = moment of inertia = 285 in^4
bending stress = (72 in-kip)(6.25 in)/(285 in^4) = 1.58 ksi
